Jason Gorscak, MD Explains How Cataract and Refractive Lens Exchange Can Provide Life-Changing Vision

1. What makes See Vision Eye Institute special?

JG: I founded See Vision Eye Institute with the goal of creating the premier ophthalmic facility in Palm Beach County. We provide our patients access to the best surgical technology along with a team who is completely focused on you and your individual needs. It’s been very exciting and rewarding to hear from our patients that we are succeeding in this goal!

2. When should someone consider cataract surgery?

JG: I recommend cataract surgery when patients notice changes in their vision that affect everyday life. If driving at night, watching television, or enjoying your hobbies become less enjoyable because of your vision, it’s reasonable to consider surgery.   The exciting part of cataract surgery is that it not only corrects blurry vision, it also affords the opportunity to gain freedom from glasses – which can be life changing!

3. How do I know which cataract technology is right for me?

JG: The traditional intraocular lens covered by Medicare or insurance, is designed to correct blurry vision. It does not eliminate the need for glasses. Many of our patients want to reduce their dependence on glasses. The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the latest advancement that is designed to minimize the need for glasses for most activities. The best part of the LAL is that it allows you to “test drive” your vision after surgery, so you can choose exactly how you want to see. We use a special light delivery device in the office to direct very targeted UV light on the implant to adjust it. When you’re thrilled with the results, we lock it in so you can enjoy your vision forever!

4. Could the benefits of the cataract surgery wear off over time?

JG: Generally speaking, no. Changes in glasses usually occur in adults because of the natural lens changes over time. With cataract surgery, the clouded lens is removed and replaced with an implant, so the cataract is gone forever. Your glasses prescription won’t change, but it’s possible to experience conditions that are a result of aging or other health issues. That’s why it’s important to have regular eye exams to protect your vision.

5. What if I don’t have a cataract, can I still get rid of my glasses?

JG: Yes!  Patients who are 45 – 60 years old, beyond the appropriate age for LASIK, don’t yet have cataracts but wish to live a glasses-free lifestyle, may be candidates for Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE).  RLE involves replacing the natural lens of the eye with an artificial one. When paired with the Light Adjustable Lens, RLE can transform your vision so you can experience clear vision and independence from glasses! The great news is that with RLE, you’ll never need cataract surgery!

It’s an honor and privilege to offer advanced technologies like LAL and RLE to Palm Beach County!
